I don’t know about you but ever since I started my freelance writing business, I try to justify new gadgets and even new clothes, in terms of my writing life. Not long ago I treated myself to a netbook, for use in the garden or for when I have to travel. I do go to London quite a bit and the netbook means that I can write on the train – it’s a lot less weight to carry around than my laptop.

Bye Bye Blackberry

For the last couple of years I have used a Blackberry, justified by the fact that I could access my emails easily while I was away. The email application, phone and camera were absolutely great, the keyboard was too small and I found the instructions on most other applications just a bit too complicated, so they never got used. I’d had the same contract for two years so when my network called to say that I could choose a new phone I leapt at the chance and chose the Nokia 5800, which is really a knockoff of the Apple Iphone. My youngest son is a graphic designer with his own company and he had the Iphone, he was a bit peeved when I got the 5800 for free because it takes videos, which his Iphone doesn’t and it has almost all of the applications that are on the Iphone.

My Monthly Payments Have Halved

Imagine my surprise when my monthly payments were quite literally cut in half when I gave up the Blackberry for the 5800, which, by the way has a great virtual keyboard and a stylus to use with it. The 5800 is much clearer in its instructions, it has a GPRS and I can access my emails and leave myself voice notes when there’s not time to write in the diary. It’s a great tool for anyone living the location independent lifestyle and does even more than the Blackberry did, it’s great for music and for catching up on BBC Iplayer if that is y9ur wont. So, if you feel like a freelancing treat, then try the Nokia 5800.
