So You Want To Be A Freelance Writer
It seems that a lot of people these days want to be a freelance writer. This desire is often prompted by one of three things, they don’t know what else to do with their lives, they think that working from home is easy, they love to write but are not sure where to start. This post is aimed at the final reason because the first two will not a freelance writer make. While I wouldn’t want to discourage anyone who wants to write from becoming a freelance writer, I think there are a few myths that need dispelling.
You Will Have More Leisure Time
If you think that you will have more time to do other things, you are mistaken. Gaining more leisure time only comes on the back of some initial, very hard work. As a working writer you will need to become more organized and a lot more disciplined with the time at your disposal. While it is great that nobody is going to be looking over your shoulder, the down side is that you will have to discipline yourself if you want to get anywhere as a freelancer.
You Don’t Have to Answer to Anyone
You will have to answer to your bank manager if there is no money coming in, you will have to answer to your clients if you miss deadlines. It may seem as though most of the boundaries are removed when you work from home and to some extent this is true. The hard part is that if you want to succeed as a freelancer, you will have to set your own boundaries.
You Will Make Your Fortune
Most writers do not make a great deal of money. If you work hard, find some regular clients and write to their satisfaction then you can make a living, even a good living. Most of us however, do not join the ranks of the rich like J.K. Rowling.
In spite of all that I have said here, if you think you have enough discipline to work under your own steam, then freelance writing is one of the best ways of making a living that I can think of.
