Running a Freelance Writing Business with RA

When freelance writing and research makes up most of your income, anything that interferes with that can be a nuisance. One of the things that non RA sufferers may not know is that when you have rheumatoid arthritis, which is an immune connective tissue disease, you also get chronic fatigue. The tiredness that you get with RA is a lot like the symptoms of flu and while you feel that way you just have to have more rest. Too many days of chronic fatigue can really harm your business and the only thing you can do is to let the client know that you are sick and may need to renegotiate the deadline.

Pace Your Writing

I try to pace my writing, even on good days now, that way I tend to get totally wasted less often, although this means that you might not get as much writing done as you did before on a good day, at least the pace is fairly regular. When you pace yourself it means you can also carry on working during a period of fatigue, providing you give yourself enough breaks throughout the day. Since Christmas I now cannot go far without the aid of my stick, which is a nuisance, but better than having my leg go from under me at the wrong time. If you have RA and have considered freelancing then I would say go ahead. So long as you remember that the disease will mean you have your limitations, it doesn’t mean that you can’t get on and do the writing you love.
