I started as a freelance writer three  years ago after I joined a blogging site called Writingup, where I met people like Sharon and Dana. We had a good time on that site until it closed down, but I will always remember it with fondness because that’s how I became location independent.

Peaceful Locations

A lot of the time I write from home, sat with my laptop, television, radio or MP3 playing because I like some background noise when I am working with my dog sat by my side. Sometimes I have to escape because I have a large family and my kids and grandkids think that a freelance writing mum and gran’s house is a good place to stop for coffee or coke after work, school or toddler’s group. When I need some peace I can take my laptop over to my son’s graphic design business and work in the office there on days when there aren’t too many clients coming in and out. In return my friend and I undertake end of project research evaluation and report writing.

My other favourite, and relatively peaceful location is the garden. When the weather is warm and the flowers are blooming I can take my laptop into the garden and work from there.

When I Go Away

Yesterday we had to drive to London to see my old aunt to sort out some problems for her, my DH did all the driving while I sat tapping away on my laptop. Every summer term I teach a module on Self, Society and Spirituality at Kingston University, my main laptop is quite heavy so I invested in a netbook, which weighs less than a bag of sugar, so that I could work there and back on the train. I often stay overnight after teaching with my middle son who has a flat in London, and I can also work there.

It’s great to be able to take your working equipment with you wherever you go. If I get really fed up I can pack up my netbook and go to the Starbucks in town to work because I am not restricted to any location. There is a unique sense of freedom attached to being location independent, and writing my location independent blog.
